SMILE LASIK in Seoul: Small Incision Lenticule Extraction Explained
What Is SMILE?
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the latest advancement in laser vision correction technology. Unlike traditional LASIK, which creates a flap in the cornea, SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a thin, lens-shaped layer of tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea. This tissue is then removed through a small incision of just 2–4 mm, reshaping the cornea to correct vision problems.
Because there’s no large corneal flap, SMILE is considered minimally invasive, with faster healing and less risk of flap-related complications.
Benefits vs LASIK/PRK
- Minimally Invasive – Only a tiny incision, compared to the 20 mm flap in LASIK.
- Faster Recovery – Many patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
- Less Dry Eye Risk – Fewer corneal nerves are cut, reducing postoperative dryness.
- Stable Cornea – No flap means more structural stability for the cornea.
- No Flap Complications – Eliminates the risk of flap displacement from injuries.
Compared to PRK, SMILE offers quicker healing, less discomfort, and earlier vision stabilization, while still avoiding flap creation.
Who It Helps (Myopia/Astigmatism)
SMILE is ideal for:
- Myopia (Nearsightedness) – Up to around -10.00 diopters, depending on corneal thickness.
- Astigmatism – Up to around -3.00 diopters.
- Active Lifestyles – Great for athletes, military personnel, or anyone at risk of eye injury.
- Patients Prone to Dry Eyes – Reduces nerve damage and dryness compared to LASIK.
However, SMILE is not currently FDA-approved for hyperopia (farsightedness). A full eye exam is essential to determine suitability.
Technology Used
SMILE is performed exclusively with the VisuMax® femtosecond laser by Carl Zeiss Meditec. This high-precision laser operates at an extremely fast rate, allowing for accurate lenticule creation and minimal tissue disruption.
In Seoul, many leading eye clinics invest in the latest generation of the VisuMax laser, combined with advanced diagnostic tools for corneal mapping and tear film analysis to ensure optimal results.
Safety & Outcomes
SMILE has been performed on millions of eyes worldwide, with high patient satisfaction rates and excellent visual outcomes. Studies show:
- Over 95% of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better.
- Lower incidence of postoperative dry eye compared to LASIK.
- Very low complication rates thanks to the flapless technique.
As with all eye surgeries, risks exist, including temporary vision fluctuations, halos, glare, and rare cases of undercorrection or overcorrection. Choosing an experienced surgeon significantly improves safety and results.
